- Damaged Mailboxes
Road Commission policy is to provide a new standard mailbox and post to replace those which are damaged due to winter road maintenance activities. A Road Commission representative will inspect the location of the damaged mailbox to determine whether winter road maintenance activities are the cause of the damage. In the case of a damaged mailbox due to winter maintenance activities, a new standard mailbox and/or post will be provided. The installation of the new post and mailbox will then be the responsibility of the property owner.
A properly installed mailbox and post in good condition will generally withstand the force of snow plowed against them. In most cases, damage occurs during the plowing process because aged posts are unable to withstand the force of heavy or wet snow hitting them.
Mailboxes must be constructed of lightweight materials, which do not exceed eleven pounds in overall weight. Two examples of acceptable posts are 4" X 4" treated wooden posts and a light gage pipe with a strength no greater than two-inch standard steel pipe. The post must not be buried any deeper than 24 inches below the surface of the ground and must not be anchored in any way. The typical height of a post is 40 inches from the ground to the bottom of the mailbox, check with your local US Post Office to verify this dimension. A maximum of two mailboxes are allow per post along with newspaper boxes being mounted below the mailbox.
The roadside face of the mailbox must be even with the outside edge o the traveled portion of a gravel road, the outside edge of the gravel shoulder on a paved road, or the inside face of a curb. When near a guardrail, a mailbox post must be located behind the guardrail with the face of the box even with the face of the guardrail.
When a mailbox is located near an intersection, it must be located 50 feet from the end of the radius of that intersection.
- Application of Brine
The Ogemaw County Road Commission places brine on gravel county roads two times during the year. Each brine application takes approximately two to three weeks to complete and includes the grading and shaping of the gravel roads, prior to the application of the brine on those gravel roads.
The residents must contact the Township, not the Road Commission, requesting service. In turn the Township will send the orders to the Road Commission who will apply the dust layer and bill the township for 2/3 of the actual gallons used.
- Seasonal Road Policy
The Ogemaw County Road Commission does not provide winter maintenance on seasonal roads from November 1st through April 30th. If you would like more information regarding seasonal roads you may contact the Road Commission.
- Road Abandonment Policy - The Road Commission is the only agency which has the authority to abandon a county public road.
1. The applicant shall submit a letter to the Road Commission requesting abandonment of a county road.
2. Along with the letter, the requesting party must submit a petition containing the following information:
A. Must describe the road or portion of the road that is sought to be abandoned.
B. The petition must be signed by seven (7) or more property owners of the township in which the road is located in.
C. The petition must be accompanied by an accurate list, certified to under oath, of the names and
mailing addresses of the occupants of each parcel of land abutting the road or portion of the road
being abandoned.
3. State reasons why abandonment should be approved.
4. Submit information along with a $200.00 filing fee to the Road Commission for processing.
